Borosilicate glasses are known for having very low\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coefficient_of_thermal_expansion\"><span class=\"s2\">coefficients of thermal expansion<\/span><\/a> (~3\u00a0\u00d7\u00a010<span class=\"s3\"><sup>\u22126<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> K<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><sup>\u22121<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> at 20\u00a0\u00b0C), making them resistant to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermal_shock\"><span class=\"s2\">thermal shock<\/span><\/a>, more so than any other common glass. Please subscribe if you would like to be notified when we have a new post.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Borosilicate glass is less subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermal_stress\"><span class=\"s2\">thermal stress<\/span><\/a> and is commonly used for the construction of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reagent_bottle\"><span class=\"s2\">reagent bottles<\/span><\/a>. Borosilicate glass is sold under such trade names as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simax\"><span class=\"s2\">Simax<\/span><\/a>, <span class=\"s2\">Borcam<\/span>, <span class=\"s2\">Borosil<\/span>, Suprax, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kimax\"><span class=\"s2\">Kimax<\/span><\/a>, <span class=\"s2\">Heatex<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyrex\"><span class=\"s2\">Pyrex<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endural\"><span class=\"s2\">Endural<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schott_AG\"><span class=\"s2\">Schott<\/span><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Refmex_GL_Glass\"><span class=\"s2\">Refmex<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kimble_Chase\"><span class=\"s2\">Kimble<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">History<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Borosilicate glass was first developed by German glassmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otto_Schott\"><span class=\"s2\">Otto Schott<\/span><\/a> in the late 19th century. Otto Schott is also the founder of today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schott_AG\"><span class=\"s2\">SCHOTT AG<\/span><\/a>, which sells borosilicate glass under the brand name <span class=\"s3\">DURAN<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/span> since 1893. Another manufacturer of <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duran_(Glas)\"><span class=\"s5\">DURAN<\/span><span class=\"s6\"><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/span><\/a> is the DURAN<\/span><span class=\"s7\"><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Group. After <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corning_Incorporated\"><span class=\"s2\">Corning Glass Works<\/span><\/a> introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyrex\"><span class=\"s2\">Pyrex<\/span><\/a> in 1915, the name became a synonym for borosilicate glass in the English-speaking world. However, borosilicate glass is the name of a glass family with various members tailoring completely different purposes. Most common today is borosilicate 3.3 glass like SCHOTT <span class=\"s3\">Duran<\/span> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyrex\"><span class=\"s2\">Pyrex<\/span><\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corning_Inc.\"><span class=\"s2\">Corning<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quartz\"><span class=\"s2\">quartz<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sodium_carbonate\"><span class=\"s2\">sodium carbonate<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aluminium_oxide\"><span class=\"s2\">aluminum oxide<\/span><\/a> traditionally used in glassmaking, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boron\"><span class=\"s2\">boron<\/span><\/a> is used in the manufacture of borosilicate glass. The composition of low-expansion borosilicate glass, such as those laboratory glasses mentioned above, is approximately 80% <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silicon_dioxide\"><span class=\"s2\">silica<\/span><\/a>, 13% <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boric_oxide\"><span class=\"s2\">boric oxide<\/span><\/a>, 4% <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sodium_oxide\"><span class=\"s2\">sodium oxide<\/span><\/a> and 2\u20133% aluminum oxide. Though more difficult to make than traditional glass due to the high melting temperature required (Corning conducted a major revamp of their operations to manufacture it), it is economical to produce. Its superior durability, chemical and heat resistance finds excellent use in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chemistry\"><span class=\"s2\">chemical<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laboratory\"><span class=\"s2\">laboratory<\/span><\/a> equipment, cookware, lighting and, in certain cases, windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/cgindustrialglass.com\/industrial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Pyrex_newspaper_ad_1922.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-490 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cgindustrialglass.com\/industrial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Pyrex_newspaper_ad_1922-270x300.png\" alt=\"Pyrex_newspaper_ad_1922\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cincinnatigasket.com\/industrial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Pyrex_newspaper_ad_1922-270x300.png 270w, https:\/\/cincinnatigasket.com\/industrial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Pyrex_newspaper_ad_1922.png 576w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 270px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 270\/300;\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>Pyrex<\/b> (<a title=\"Trademark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trademark\">trademarked<\/a> as PYREX) is a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Brand name\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brand_name\">brand<\/a> introduced by <a title=\"Corning Inc.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corning_Inc.\">Corning Inc.<\/a> in 1908 for a line of clear, low-thermal-expansion plastic <a title=\"Borosilicate glass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borosilicate_glass\">borosilicate glass<\/a> used for<a title=\"Laboratory glassware\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laboratory_glassware\">laboratory glassware<\/a> and <a title=\"Kitchenware\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kitchenware\">kitchenware<\/a>. Pyrex sold in the <a title=\"United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a> is made of tempered soda-lime glass; outside of <a title=\"North America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\">North America<\/a> the costlier borosilicate is still used.<\/p>\n<p>Corning no longer manufactures or markets PYREX-branded borosilicate glass kitchenware and bakeware in the US. <a title=\"World Kitchen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Kitchen\">World Kitchen, LLC<\/a>, which was spun off from Corning in 1998, licensed the pyrex (all lower case) brand for their own line of kitchenware products\u2014differentiated by their use of clear tempered <a title=\"Soda-lime glass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soda-lime_glass\">soda-lime glass<\/a> instead of borosilicate.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The European manufacturer of Pyrex, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arc_International\"><span class=\"s2\">Arc International<\/span><\/a>, uses borosilicate glass in its Pyrex glass kitchen products;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borosilicate_glass#cite_note-1\"><span class=\"s8\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/a> however, the U.S. manufacturer of Pyrex kitchenware uses tempered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soda-lime_glass\"><span class=\"s2\">soda-lime glass<\/span><\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borosilicate_glass#cite_note-2\"><span class=\"s8\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/span><\/a> Thus Pyrex can refer to either soda-lime glass or borosilicate glass when discussing kitchen glassware, while Pyrex, Bomex, Duran, TGI and Simax all refer to borosilicate glass when discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laboratory_glassware\"><span class=\"s2\">laboratory glassware<\/span><\/a>. The real difference is the trademark and the company that owns the Pyrex name. The original Corning ware made of borosilicate glass was trademarked in capital letters (PYREX). When the kitchenware division was sold, the trademark was changed to lowercase (pyrex) and switched to low thermal-expansion soda-lime glass.
